This reminds me of ice hockey legend, Wayne Gretsky who said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
During the first Covid lockdown of 2020 my wife and I debated whether or not one particular institution would learn much about their clients’ preferences as a result of the challenges of the lockdown. Although I entirely agreed with my wife in terms of the potential learnings to this institution, I also made the comment that “You seldom get answers to questions you’re not asking”.
There are people in your network, including you manager, who can see obstacles and challenges to your professional growth, but they’re not telling you, because you’re not asking. If you want to develop yourself professionally (or personally), seek out the opinions of people you trust and respect as to how you might be more effective- they’ll be more than happy to share their thoughts with you if they sense you’re open to feedback.
