It may seem a strange thing that the psychological safety of team members is partly determined by the team leader's ability to make team members accountable in an equitable and consistent fashion. Therefore when a team leader allows team member to consistently avoid taking ownership and responsibility for issues that they should, its one explanation for why the rest of the team can feel somewhat unsafe and unstable- as a team member I like to know exactly where I stand even if it may mean facing some uncomfortable truths, and I feel better in an environment where my team leader is consistent in practice. Not only that, but when team leaders let some team members operate at a lower level of accountability it undermines the credibility of the team leader and can also undermine team motivation.
